Do it today as part of the blogathon. Go to Meryl or Laurence and help by an ambulance for Magen Daviv Adom. Thank you.

BODY: Music 4

The biggest thing in Israeli music this summer is the comeback of the most popular band in Israel ever – Mashina. Those guys went on a break 8 years ago after producing many fine albums for years and now they are back. They had a first concert in Caesarea’s Roman amphitheater on Thursday and it looks like it’s more then a one-time series of shows, rather a true comeback. I plan to go to one of their next concerts.

They’ve released a new song and it’s number one on the music chart. The song is called “Mashehu Katan VeTov” (something small and good). This recording isn’t too good cause it was made on the news conference when they announced their comeback.

You can buy Mashina’s cds here.

BODY: Panoramic photos

These two photos were taken from the observation deck on top of the round tower of the Azrieli Towers in Tel Aviv. I have no idea who took them, I found it at Ran Leonard’s livejurnal.

The first one is a view towards north east to the downtown area that is actually in the city of Ramat Gan (which I’ve shown you photo of before). The second one is a view towards north – North Tel Aviv neighborhoods that are more posh than the rest of the city, (I bet we can see Imshin home in the photo). The chimney near the beach is part of the Reading power station that was built in 1937 far at the outskirts of Tel Aviv of those days. Today the power station is right in the middle of the city polluting the air. Further north are the beaches of Herzliah, which is, were I go to when I go to the sea.

BODY: A few links

I’ve rearranged my favorites and found a few links I saved in order to link in the blog but never did. So here they are:

Microsoft fails all over the world – There are giant t.v. screens scattered in Tel Aviv’s major junctions mainly showing commercials. Someone was lucky enough to catch Microsoft software fails on one of those big screens, this one in “Rakevet Tzafon”.

Did you see the trailer for WEBLOG: The Movie.

2 Israeli bloggers: Sahi of Sha! who has been around for a long time and I should have linked to him earlier. And Indian student Dinesh Rao who blogs from Israel (link via Allison)

BODY: Good riddance

So Saddam's sons Qusay and Uday are dead – well done! The Americans must release photos of their buddies, doesn’t matter how mutilated they are. If they won’t show photos rumors and conspiracy theories will flood the Arab world were these theories are very wide spread.

All we need now is to catch their father. I had a tip on Saddam's whereabouts 2 month ago. And thanks for Frank J. for linking to that post yesterday.

BODY: Eurobasket2003 – update 2

Well finally they’ve added Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But the mountain is still mount Meron and not mount Hermon. So you can still email them about that: info@eurobasket2003.com

BODY: Eurobasket2003 – update

The Swedes changed a bit Israel’s page again, making it worse. So now they’ve added the highest mountain category but again they are mistaken. They named mount Meron the highest mountain though it 1000 meters shorter than mount Hermon.

Ma’ariv reports today about the removal of the capital data from the page. A source in the Israeli Foreign Ministry told Ma’ariv that the Ministry is not content with that adjustment and they are waiting for an official response to the complaint they registered to Sweden.

I remind you that you can apply a bit of pressure yourself. Just email them info@eurobasket2003.com - Thank you. And if any blogger wish to follow up this story on his own blog please do so.

BODY: An encouraging message from Iran

I’ve had my first Iranian reader sign my guestmap.

Leily wrote: “Hey I am Iranian, you know what, the kurdish thing was darn good.. Though I don't agree with everything that you say, but I enjoy your work.

Your english ain't that broken though. And I wish people didn't hate each other this much, didn't blow each other up..

I am tired of it all, when is it going to end.

Plus linking to a Jewish Blog isn't offensive at all, it is practicing the democracy.
As an Iranian, I don't remember we muslims had problem with Jewishes, not really..
And Isreal, you know what, as long as it doesn' have anything to do with our land none of our business, this is what Iranian mian stream thinks..

BODY: Sweden lacks geography knowledge

Sweden will host the Basketball European Championship this year. They already have a website for the competition. Since our nice friendly Arab neighbors don’t want to play with us we play in Europe (and doing fine in basketball).

Anyway the site runs a page for each participating country. In that page there is data on the country’s area, population, currency, capital and the highest mountain (example). Except that is for the leper state of Israel. According to the Swedes Israel has neither capital city nor a high mountain.

Ma’ariv found it out yesterday, then Israel actually had a capital listed on that page it was Tel Aviv ?@# not Jerusalem.

The paper asked the organizers of the competition and was replied that the organizers are following the official stand of the Swedish government. The Swedish embassy in Israel confirmed it. In the Israeli foreign ministry they were surprised to hear that. The office spokesman said that although they know diplomatically Sweden doesn’t recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel it is unaccepted that the Swedes set Tel Aviv as the capital in official publications. The Israeli foreign ministry registered a complaint.

That was yesterday. So today the Swedes fixed the problem: Israel has no capital city (and no highest mountain – Hello what about mount Hermon?)

If you want to register your complaint with the championship organizers send an email info@eurobasket2003.com

BODY: The Jewish refugees

Intresting article by Dr. Avi Becker, secretary-general of the World Jewish Congress, today in Ha’aretz. He tries to answer why the fact that the number of Jews that were expeled and forced out by Arab countries is greater than the number of Arabs who were either forced or chose to follow their leadership and leave Israel was hushed.

I was invited recently to participate in a discussion by the U.S. House of Representative's Committee on International Relations on the Jewish exodus from the Arab states in 1948. Together with reports from experts and the testimonies of refugees, we presented the exodus of some 900,000 Jews as part of an anti-Semitic policy that included anti-Jewish legislation and incitement, the seizure of assets and pogroms.

From a legal point of view, as portrayed by jurist Carol Bazri, the daughter of Jewish
refugees from Iraq, the process was one of blatant "ethnic cleansing."

After the documents were submitted and the testimonies were heard, a congressman said to us: "The things I have read in the material submitted to me and the things I have heard in the testimonies are astounding. The systematic persecution and discrimination against the Jews is reminiscent of Germany in the 1930s; and the
physical persecution, including merciless killing by hanging, is similar to the extermination of the Jews in the 1940s. Why haven't we heard about this? Why doesn't the government of Israel tell the world the story of the Jewish refugees from the Arab states?"

BODY: Israelis in the US

It is estimated that almost half a million Israelis are living in the US, most of them with no intention of coming back to Israel. Another 150 thousand live in other countries apart from the US. (Ynet)

The major “Israeli cities” are: 130-169 thousand Israelis live in New York City, 100-130 thousand in Los Angeles, 45 thousand in Miami, 40 thousand in San Francisco. 208 Israelis are in American Jails. Around 2000 Israelis are staying without permit in the US.

Israel is a free country and everybody has the right to live were they want but still it does make me a bit uncomfortable to read these numbers.

BODY: Lake Kinneret looking good

You might remember that last winter was extremely rainy in Israel (by local standards). During the winter the whole country followed centimeter by centimeter how the water level rose. It’s mid summer and the Kinneret is still in pretty good shape. Check out how it looked a year ago and how it looks this summer (click here to view the large photo). The photos are of Tiberias (aka Tverya in Hebrew) dock (at least this is how it looks like to me).

There is a slight problem though now that the water level is high. During the last few years a great amount of vegetation grew on the banks of the shrinking Kinneret. Now it was all flooded thus the bottom near the shores are filled with dead bush – That’s according to a local resident of Tiberias. If we’ll have another rainy winter those drowned bush will eventually disappear.

Update: Okay, I know the big photo didn’t show up before, but now I’ve fixed it.
