BODY: So weird you need to read it

This is definitely one of the weirdest suggestions how to solve the Israeli-Palestinian problem I’ve ever heard. Go read it over at Ailflay Hraka. Read my comment (no.25) to it. (Link via InstaPundit).

The BBC finds it hard to believe that people in Israel can still smile and enjoy a good joke. (Photo of Erez Tal and co-host Orna Banai - "Only In Israel")

“An Israeli comedy programme seeing the funny side of living with violence in the Middle East is proving enormously popular with audiences. Only In Israel is sweeping all before it in the nation's TV ratings and the programme makers have defended it as therapeutic.

Erez Tal, the show's creator, told BBC World Service how seeing the comedy within the country's tragic situation could be a cathartic experience. "Right now we're the number one show in Israel," he said. "Most people say that it is a relief every week to see the show and laugh with you about the situation." But the programme has been called "tasteless" with more than 500 Israelis and many more Palestinians killed in the last two years of fighting.

In one show, a couple sits in a cafe and sings an anthem of the Israeli peace movement. A balloon pops and they dive under the table, fearing a suicide bomb attack This is what passes for humour for the one in 12 Israelis who watch the show every Friday night - a staggering figure given that most orthodox Jews aren't watching at this time for religious reasons. Assessing this dark brand of conflict humour, John Elkins, arts correspondent for IBA television news in Israel, said: "Israelis are searching for something that will take the sting away from the events. "Often these things are unspeakable, society has to think of a way of dealing with them and humour is one way," he explained.

Violence in the Middle East erupts almost daily. At one time the television schedules would revert to continuous news programmes if an attack had occurred. But, as Mr Elkin explained: "Since the frequency has become a monthly, weekly almost daily event in our lives here, the scheduling isn't changed." "Comedy goes on and it has to deal with what's going on in the country otherwise it's not funny." But more than 750,000 viewers have complained about the programme.
(Gil: I find this number groundless, maybe they meant 750). One objector told the BBC: "The situation in Israel is so sensitive. I don't think people should make jokes."

Meanwhile, Erez Tal, the show's creator and co-star, told the BBC World Service's Arts In Action programme that complaints were inevitable, but under the circumstances, laughter was sometimes the only possible reaction. A sentiment that was echoed by one of the shows fans when they said: "If we don't laugh, then we will cry and we can't cry all day." Suggesting laughter as a form of therapy, Mr Elkin went on to say that humour is helping people to come to terms with the daily realities of conflict. "If you live here you feel the daily strain of do I join my friend for a coffee or do I run the risk of being blown up over a cup of cappuccino?" he explained. "When reality becomes that horrible you have to figure out ways of dealing with it. Humour is a good way and evidently people are enjoying it because the jokes keep running."

As I’m saying all along here people go on with their daily lives. It’s impossible not to. People love to laugh it’s healthy for the soul. We can’t stay at home and cry all day. In the weekend’s magazines satirical parts of Israeli daily newspapers they tend to be very sarcastic, non-Israelis may find it very hard to understand how sick jokes can be made on heavy issues. I find it amusing, I wish I could have translated some but I think the jokes will lose their catch when translated into English.

BODY: The Jenin Massacre

Surprise surprise, the U.N report rejected Palestinian charges of a massacre in Jenin camp! Acording to the report 200 armed Palestinian fighters had used the West Bank camp as a base. The report also dismissed Arab claims that hundreds of Palestinians died in Jenin during Israel's "Operation Defensive Shield". The U.N number of Palestinian fatalties is the same as The number givven By the IDF immediately after the fighting: 52. The report mentions that half of them were armed fighters.

What pissed off evreybody here in Israel was that the Arab claims were so dillusional no one here thought that intelligent people around the world will buy it. The innitial Arab fantasy stories / lies were about 3000 Palestinian killed then it went down to 500. People here were amazed that people actually bought the Palestinian fantasy that was so ridicules. It made clear that people around the glob are unaware of Arab tendency to exaggerate and baldly lie.

Please remember the “Jenin Massacre” lie when ever you here a Palestinian spokesman slander Israel.

BODY: Targeting Hamas

Israeli government ordered the IDF to retaliate against Hamas targets, for yesterday's cafeteria bombing at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. I don’t think any new measures will be taken, my guess is that some empty buildings will be destroyed by the Israeli air force.

I think a stronger reaction is needed. Each and evrey Palestinian who is affilated to the Hamas is a target and should be killed, the sooner the better. For example: Abdel Aziz Rantisi, a senior Hamas official in Gaza praised who said after the attack that "the Zionists are paying the price of their terror and we say to all Zionists to leave Palestinian land." Rantisi is somewhat of spokesman of the Hamas. You can see him on your t.v. screen on zillion different channels after Hamas terror attacks. Another Hamas Spokespersom is Mahmud Al Zahar. Those two are not hiding and it is very easy to locate them – I say they should be targetted and killed. I don’t see any reason why those two are allowed to cheer and incite and who knows what they do except that.

No doubt the best target is Hamas founder and leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. This evil man is the responcible for the thousands of terror attack his organization as perpatrated threw the years. As for the reactions for his killing – the Hamas are already trying their best to murder Israelis so it will be difficult for them to pop astronger reaction out of their sleeves. Will the killing of Yassin deter Hamas from attacking Israel or damage their capabilities? The answer is no, But that doesn’t matter. The only mean the Arabs understand is force only when they’ll fear Israel enough there will be a chance for some kind of disscation with them.

Update: I’ve heard on Israeli Army Radio that Hamas warns Israel they will murder a 100 Israelis for each Hamas leader Israel kills. Some people in Gaza are a little worried, or so it seems.

BODY: Terror bombing at Jerusalem University

A short time ago there was an explosion in the Hebrew University at Har Hatzofim Jerusalem. At least 7 people killed, 65 injured 15 of them in serious condition. The explosion happened in a cafeteria.

I’m a bit worried because I have friends that study in that university.

It seems someone planted a bomb and it wasn’t a suicide bomber this time. There a lot of Arab-Israeli students in the university and the police is checking whether one of them sneaked the bomb pass the security guards.

I’ll update later. For update report: Ha’aretz, Jerusalem Post.

BODY: Shabak warns: There are 60 planned suicide bombings on the way

The head of the Shabak (Shin Bet – Israeli internal security service), Avi Dichter, gave his biannual security report to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee yesterday. The figures are scary.

In the past few days alone, the Shin Bet succeeded in thwarting 12 attacks that were to have taken place in Israel. He also said the Shabak had warnings of an additional 60 planned suicide bombings.

Since the start of the year, there had been 91 suicide attacks, and 48 "sacrifice" shooting attacks, in which the terrorist did not set out to commit suicide, but knew it is likely that they will not get alive..

The groups mainly responsible for the suicide attacks were Hamas, which carried out 51 such acts, Islamic Jihad (31 attacks) and the Fatah (22 attacks).

The first six months of 2002 showed a marked increase in the number of terror attacks. Between 1993, when the suicide attack was first employed against Israeli targets, and September 2000 there were 42 suicide missions. From September 2000 until December 2001, there were 70.

The Shabak currently has 2,259 detainees in its cells: 84 senior officers in the various terror groups; 172 local terror commanders; 565 low-ranking operatives; and 1,486 active recruits, including 138 whom the Shin Bet describes as "ticking bombs," or activists who were planning to carry out a suicide mission.

585 - the number of Israeli fataleties since the beginning of the conflict in September 29 2000.

220 (38%) killed inside Israel, 206 (35%) in the West Bank, 106 in Jerusalem (18%), 53 in the Gaza Strip (9%).

BODY: Quite a lot of things happened during the last 24 hours

1) Another suicide bomber blew himself up in Jerusalem. Only five people where wounded none of them seriously injured. This is one of the most pathetic suicide bombings I can recall. The bomber was only 17 and he was probably chicken shit that’s why he detonated the bomb so fast and not in a good place where he would have killed a lot of people.

Just to let you know how things went when the first reports about the suicide bomber begun. The initial report on the radio said there was an explosion in central Jerusalem and it is thought to be a suicide bombing – at that point people in the office were very worried, including me. There is kind of a bad familiar feeling that pops immediately when you here about suicide bombings. Sadly, every Israeli is very acquainted with this feeling. Just a few minutes later reports suggested that there were no mortalities (except for the bomber) and that the number of injured is very law. I instantly felt relived, and it wasn’t only me, the radio stopped the breaking news coverage and went back on with the usual broadcast about summer culture events. No one here gets excited anymore from suicide bombings as if it was a natural thing. If not to many got hurt then it’s really not interesting.

2) Two brothers from the settlement Tapuah were murdered today by Palestinians when they came to do business in a Palestinian village. I can’t believe how stupid people can be. I just don’t get it, where did those two been in the last 20 month? Didn’t they notice that that it’s a bit dangerous in Palestinian areas?

3) And what do you say about that: Israeli woman stabbed a Palestinian terrorist with his own knife! The Palestinian broke into a couple’s house in the settlement Itamar around 3 a.m. he went to their bedroom and stabbed them. The couple struggled with him and the woman even stubbed him a few times with the knife he stabbed her with. A soldier that was near by run in and finished the job and wasted the guy. The woman was lightly injured and her husband sustained moderate injuries.

4) About the high alert from yesterday – Israeli security services caught 2 out of the 3 Palestinians infiltrated Israel that caused the alert. Later the police found the explosive belt those two carried and later dumped. So today it was much faster to get back home from work.

BODY: A manhunt to catch a suicide bomber

Israeli police declared a high security alert in the south part of the Sharon region (where I live) following warnings of terror activity in the area. Apparently a suspected suicide bomber, Palestinian dressed in an IDF uniform and carrying a bag, was spotted near the small town Matan.

Police have deployed roadblocks all over, it took me a lot of time to get back home, due to huge traffic jams created by the roadblocks.

My guess is that he turned back to Palestinian areas after he was spotted, but we’ll just have to wait and see if there will be an exolosion soon.
